![]() These first lines also bring in some of the most important words of the story, those that a young reader is meant to familiarize themselves with, box, brick, clock, chicks, all of which rhyme, at least to an extent. These include foxes, boxes, bricks, and something that Seuss creates called a “Knox.” The latter is a yellow anthropomorphic character that Seuss used for this specific story. The speaker introduces some of the primary imagery that will make up the bulk of the poem. In the first lines of ‘Fox in Socks,’ the reader encounter’s Seuss’ unmistakable use of rhyme. It has had a lasting influence, like his other works, on children’s literature. Fox in Socks is one of Seuss’ most original stories. By the end of the poem, Knox sticks Fox in a bottle and comes up with a rhyme of his own. He isn’t up to the task and continually complains about how hard they are. ![]() The former brings out all sorts of tongue twisters throughout the poem and tries to challenge Knox into saying them. The story focuses on two characters, a Fox and a yellow creature called Knox, while using a variety of wacky words. The cast is large and varied, beginning with a salt trader’s daughter in 1000 B.C. Saylor frames his compelling, fast-moving narrative in elegant prose, using the device of a fictional family whose fates are closely interwoven with the vicissitudes and fortunes of the city. With his meticulous knowledge of ancient Rome, the subject matter seems a perfect match for someone of his impressive talent-a centuries-long journey from the founding of Rome to the rise and fall of the Republic and the assassination of Julius Caesar. Pioneered by the late James Michener and current purview of novelist Edward Rutherfurd, Saylor’s entry into the genre is a noteworthy one. Apparently this visuality isn’t universal: I was watching an interview with Susan Sontag, who was talking about how, when she writes, she hears the words rather than sees images. I guess how I write does issue from a sensorial place and it happens very visually. I think it would be a lie to say anything other than that writing fiction is generally a sensory process for me and LOTE was no different.
