![]() One of my favorite (and the most telling) moments in the book is when Aza is in the middle of a panic attack. She doesn’t trust medication because: why should you need to take a pill to be yourself? Which is exactly how I used to feel about medicating my depression.Īza is also aware that her issues can be grating for her friends and those around her. That was what broke me.Īza deals with mental illness in a way that I related to almost too much. The book is incredible because it powerfully discusses obsessive compulsion disorder alongside mental illness in general. ![]() However, they get to know each other and see where things go. He knows it may have something to do with the reward, though, and is (rightfully) tentative. Thanks to Daisy’s quick thinking, they tell Davis that they’re there because Aza had a crush on him. ![]() Her best friend, Daisy, suggests that they try to gain the reward for information leading to the billionaire’s capture, so they sneak onto his property.īut of course, they’re caught by the groundskeeper and brought to Aza’s friend from “Sad Camp”, Davis. Aza has compulsions, intrusive thoughts, and a middle school friend whose father just disappeared. Turtles All the Way Down follows Aza as she deals with depression, love, and solving mysteries. ![]() I know I’m wildly behind on this one, but I finally read Turtles All the Way Down and it made me feel all sorts of ways. ![]()

![]() ![]() I will ream out every wrinkle in your cunt, Tania, big with seed. He continues to invoke Tania’s name as though she were a muse, a goddess, but also a sexual fantasy: “O Tania, where now is that warm cunt of yours, those fat, heavy garters, those soft, bulging thighs? There is a bone in my prick six inches long. ![]() “Your Sylvester is a little jealous now?” he writes. Tania is a Jewish woman for whose sake Miller “would become a Jew.” She lives with a man named Sylvester, but she carries on an affair with Miller. “This is libel, slander, defamation of character.” He concludes by calling the novel a “song” and writes: “It is to you, Tania, that I am singing.” ![]() Here, Miller steps back to introduce the book that is just beginning: “This is not a book,” he writes. Here, Fraenken’s name has been changed to Boris, and Miller begins the book by describing Boris’s lice problem and his views on the “cancer of time.” It is the fall of Miller’s second year in Paris. The name actually refers to the Villa Seurat in Paris, where Miller spent a prolonged sojourn as the guest of Michael Fraenken, who, by many accounts, was the one to inspire Miller to write Tropic of Cancer. When the novel opens, Miller is living at the Villa Borghese. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Certainly the women in The Hand of Fatima do. Women especially seem to bear the brunt of these religious wars. The imposition of one religion over another seems especially pertinent at the moment as ISIS advances on Baghdad, bringing its triumphant medieval caliphate to one Iraqi city after another. What elevates The Hand of Fatima above the ordinary is its subject matter: the expulsion of the Moors by the triumphant Christians Cathedral of the Sea apparently involves the Inquisition in 14th century Spain and its treatment of the Jews. Judging by The Hand of Fatima and the blurb about Cathedral of the Sea Falcones is interested in historical religious conflict as well as the usual staples of blockbusters (love, betrayal, war, injustice, see–sawing fortune and human frailty). Nearly 900 pages long, it’s a blockbuster, successor to Falcones’ European bestseller Cathedral of the Sea. The Hand of Fatima is a sprawling historical novel, set in 17th century Spain when the Christians had defeated the Moors. ![]() ![]() ![]() Unfortunately, it's also terribly convenient. I'd suggested that this is a terribly oversimplified model for our universe expanding. There's no center, and the universe isn't expanding into anything. ![]() It's not an explosion from a specific place, with galaxies hurtling out like cosmic jetsam. Perhaps it's dark energy acceleration, or the earliest inflationary period of the universe when EVERYTHING expanded faster than the speed of light. So, how can galaxies be traveling faster than the speed of light when nothing can travel faster than light? Warp speed galaxies come up when I talk about the expansion of the universe. And then I'll say something like, " galaxies are moving away from us faster than the speed of light." There's more than a few items on this list, and it's confusing at best. I've also said "nothing can travel faster than the speed of light". "Not even light itself can escape a black hole", and then, " black holes and they are the brightest objects in the universe". ![]() ![]() It’s educational it’s a book we should give to our children and to our adults to help them see the sense of wonder that is outside, and its captured perfectly though the power of words and the beautiful illustrations. Rhianna Walton: When American War came out, one of the things you spoke about was how the novel was born out of your anger about certain global inequalities. It is a pleasure to share What Strange Paradise as Indiespensable Volume 93. Simultaneously a narrative of hope and a devastating portrait of what is happening in our world, right now, What Strange Paradise is an example of how fiction at its best does more to explicate and illuminate the challenges we face than any newspaper headline or documentary could accomplish. Expertly teasing out the strings of exile, pride, greed, trauma, longing, and hope that entangle his diverse characters, El Akkad makes clear indictments without sacrificing the complex emotions of the “bad” actors - the smugglers, the Greek islanders struggling with an influx of migrants, the apathetic tourists, a nationalistic and traumatized military. Portland-based writer Omar El Akkad’s latest work, What Strange Paradise, is a beautiful, angry novel about the migrant crisis in Europe. ![]() ![]() ![]() Trying to get the ball rolling can be tricky, but a funny pickup line is sure to make them smile.
